Transfers

Preparing your domain for transfer

Complete the checks that help a domain transfer start cleanly.

Check account access

Sign in to the provider that currently manages the domain. If you cannot access the account, recover access before starting the transfer.

Confirm the contact email

Make sure the domain contact email is current and accessible. Some transfers use that address for approval or security messages.

Check transfer protection

Many providers protect a domain from being moved without permission. The simple action may be called Unlock for transfer. The technical term can be registrar lock.

Get the transfer code if required

Many domains use a private transfer code to confirm that you are allowed to move them. Request it from the current provider and keep it private.

Review the expiry date

Do not ignore an urgent renewal while planning a transfer. If the domain is close to expiry, check the action Kiyo recommends or ask support whether renewal should be handled first.

Check recent restrictions

Some domains cannot move immediately after registration, a previous transfer or certain ownership changes. The exact restriction depends on the extension and provider rules.

Review website and email connection

Record the current nameservers or DNS provider. A transfer should not require changing where the domain points, but knowing the current connection helps you recognise an unintended change.
